Ilulissat Greenland

Ilulissat is the municipal seat and largest town of the Avannaata municipality in western Greenland, located about 350 km (220 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. With a population of 4,541 as of 2013, it is the third-largest city in Greenland, after Nuuk and Sisimiut, and it has nearly as many sled dogs as people. The name Ilulissat comes from the Kalaallisut word for “icebergs.” The nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has made the town Greenland’s most popular tourist destination, and tourism is now its main industry. The town sits next to the Ilulissat Icefjord, where enormous icebergs calve from one of the most productive glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere.
